Rabid Grannies - My brain is rotten 7" Reviews in swedish can be found at the bottom of this page. KILLED BY NOISE: Young band from Sweden and they don´t play a crust, but they attack you with angry and pissed off hardcore. 4 songs on 1st side, other 3 on second side. First side sounds like influenced by old italian bands and it´s really fast and pissed of stuff. Side B brings 3 anthems of maniacal hardcore / thrash, similar to czechs See You In Hell or so. Lyrics are about life´s troubles and skateboarding. It´s not any excellent record, but sure it´s good record and band! (OI) MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #258 September 2005: Fuck yes, you cretins! The RABID GRANNIES from Umeå, Sweden have agreeting from across the ocean: They are sick of you! The seven song MyBrain Is Rotten thrashes your fucking face off the minute the needletouches down. The music can be manic and possessed by Satan, illustratedon "Sick of You," or it can slow down for a very nice chugging electricguitar punk episode such as the introduction to "Thrash Life." The RABIDGRANNIES write smoe first-rate negative lyrics. Some of the words to "I'mSick of You" are "Keep on with your preaching shit as long as you knowthat I'm not your friend." That cuts to the bone! This is a great roughand ready punk EP with urgency in their playing and passionate politicalviews. (Bruce Roehrs) MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #258 September 2005: You might remember another 7" from these guys from 2003, but this is milesahead of that effort. If you miss tje Y2K thrash wave with bands likeearly DS 13 and Tear It Up, this one is for you. I know it's common wisdomlately that people burned ot on thrash after 2003 and now demand somemelody or whatever in their punk, but when this style is done right it'sundeniable. Raw, fast aggro thrash for circle pits and skating vert. Getinto it! (Felix Havoc) Aversionline.com: 7/10 Here's some fast and energetic hardcore/punk from this rather young looking Swedish band that ranges from fast and pissed to subtly melodic and catchy, all with straight up yelling vocals that sound a little different from the norm and add to the general sense of angry yet fun attitude that the band has going on. "Thrashlife" heads in more of an old school hardcore direction and throws in just a hint of melody at the start, "Spela Snabbare" is a straightforward yet memorable hardcore track, "In Front of the Machine" is a touch heavier and closes on a strong note with a faint hint of a crust edge, and the other cuts are basically tried and true hardcore/punk without a ton of variety. They get the job done and have a good time, you know? The recording is pretty damn good, and the bass tone definitely sounds awesome and adds a lot of density. The guitars could stand to be a touch heavier or more balanced against the vocals, but for the most part everything sounds quite good for this style, and even the fastest areas of tracks like "Du Skiter I Mig" don't get too messy. The 7" comes in a standard sleeve with orange and black printing that depicts the band members hovering over some buildings and some horror/sci-fi characters doing the same on the back cover. Inside is a matte black and white insert with handwritten text presenting the lyrics - which are a mix of snotty Swedish and English attacks on day to day bullshit: These dudes like skateboarding, thrashing, and telling people to fuck off! Hey, they did name their band after a 1989 Troma horror flick, after all! Not a bad EP, which is possibly their debut? Fans of fast hardcore that want to have a good time rather than stressing about overly serious socio-political issues should look into this one. They're definitely nodding to the classics while kind of doing their own thing in a way that keeps them from sounding like one of those rehashed bands that's trying to leech off of retro trends, so that's a good sign. [Notable tracks: Thrashlife, Spela Snabbare, In Front of the Machine] Jimmy Blom/Hard Rock Info: Swedish punks RABID GRANNIES punk loose like never before. Their HC/punksound remind me of D.S.-13 and bands like that, which I guess is greatstuff to skate to hell to....but what do I know?, I don't skate! The 7 tracks that I get on this vinyl are damned good anyway. And by theway, for a long time it looked like this EP woulden't be released at all.I don't know why though, but now it's here and you better check it out mate! That's all I have to say.. Over and out. |
