Local Oafs - Interview by Seymour Butts Ladies and gentlemen let me present the Local Oafs, so dudes What's up with that new recording session?? Nero: Hi boys and girls! We've recorded some tracks at our rehearsal Space and we actually mastered it this time so the sound is full and beautiful, 5:1 sound. The diversity between the tracks comes out better this time because of the slick sound. It's gonna be a full length something. Full length seem to be maybe, err... what should we call it??? A Less suitable format for your no-fi shitty hi-speed thrash rock n roll, a 7" is more like a full length for you when your hitting the record player with 30+ songs. This record session must hold over 80 songs or? Nero: An album feels a thousand times bigger than a 7". It's an ego thing...with 28 songs. We have plenty of songs left unrecorded too but since recordning sessions suck fucking shit we only did enough songs so it'd be enough for a full length. I think the songs are pretty good, we don't do these ultra-short tracks anymore 'cause they only end up as fillers anyways. The songs Have an average length <1 min though so it's not like we're goin' prog rock on your ass. So evolvement in the Mongo-Punk factories in Sweden, no more assembly line crucifixion but a new finer hand job by these busy daycare workers, so has the lyrics also evolved or are you still at the basic? Nero: Nah. Something like "Put me out of my misery/Beat me beat me violently" from the first 7" I'm still quite proud of and would use If I came up with it today. When you've already written like 60 songs you need to come up with new subjects though so I guess we handled the most obvious subjects back in 99' and there's a natural evolvement there towards new interests, thought and things that bother us. I think our lyrics are quite good compared to many other swedish bands. There are few who stands out. Henry Fiats from the Swedish 7" and forward have good lyrics, Sunday Morning Einsteins have some good ones to, same goes for Skitsystem and Totalitär. Too many claim they have a political message/agenda and just write the same unoriginal peace-punk rip off shit over and over again. So all the lyrics are in Swedish? Nero: No, some in Swedish...some in English. I planned to get this girl to help me writing a song in Italian but she moved to southern Sweden. That was kind of a turn-off. So correct me if I'm wrong, but there's a risk for lot's of cheesy Eros Ramazotti style Italian love songs? Just that particular one was supposed to be a classic Italian hardcore song but it didn't happen. Both me and Knullhålet wanted to show Our ability for sensitive country ballads on the album but it didn't happen for some reason. We don't really care if people yell "play faster" and stuff like that. If we did music to please the crowd on a Swedish hardcore festival we'd do Tragedy covers and there's a pretty slim chance of that happening. So what's up with all live shows that you're doing right now? It's been totally dead about you and all of a sudden back with a new recording and doing four shows in three weeks (lot's if you got in mind how big Sweden is...) Yeah. It's great that people seem to like our stuff and want us to come back to play their town/venue for a second/third time. We rarely beg for gigs. They just fall in our lap which is kinda sweet. We go where we're wanted, play, drink, pass out and go home. The reasons for the six month lapse in productivity is Knullhålet living 700 miles away in Umeå and the Manikins - a more rock/garage type of group which seems to take time but fortunately not too much focus from Knullhålet and André Van Dem Bourg. The Manikins have done two albums and a time and money consuming european tour and off course Local Oafs can't keep very busy with two members abroad. There's no complaining from them though they have to rehearse sometimes two times a day with different bands which is cool. They seem to like to have their hands full so more power to them. I guess that we could say that you are very productive thinking of the situation, has this move from Knullhålet given any effect on the bands, have it lead to problems or does it work out having a member about 760km from the base? You have been up and played in Knullhålet´s home town several time I seem to remember, and you have played shows in the southern parts of Sweden, but never abroad! Is it time for an Mongoattack over Europe soon or? Henry Fiats Open Soar has been down in Germany right? and In England? do you know what the status for mongo music is in these other countries? People from Poland have showed interest in you because of your busy schedule on the Local Oafs webpage, well all these seem to be a good possibility for a larger tour or what is stopping you? NERO: You're right sir. Our mummified friends in Henry Fiats Open sore have played the continent several times. They've been active since 97' and have released about ten 7" and two albums, know how to play and so on so it's useless to even begin to compare the bands in that aspect. We've actually played Åland which is in Finland if I'm not misinformed. We'll probably tour but we're not in a hurry and we will not beg, borrow and steal to get gigs. If we're wanted we'll go...anywhere. The Manikins tour showed that it's probably not a good idea to go if you're completely unknown. I know they had a great time but economically it was a monumental failure and we/they don't have money for another trip like that (England is off course the reason for the loss of money). Europe decides whether Europe is ready for ze mongo attack. Knullhålet has been a real sport coming down the long way to Nyköping whenever he's needed so it's been no problem whatsoever. Off course we'd do more stuff and rehearse on a more regularly basis if he'd been livin' here though. Hope he's comin' home to papa soon. The furhest down southern gig we've ever done is Gothenburg. Speaking of gig's and tour's the best way to get used by a pimp is getting a nice transport, rumours though say that some obscure Punk band from Nyköping have destroyed your car? Can you fill us in? Those rumours are completely false. We lend out our van to Disfear but they're all good drivers. Our van was, to use the words of Ice T, Born Dead. We're gonna switch engine soon though. That Ford OCH-motor is not action-rock enough for us. Americans cant build cars worth shit. When we are on the subject, you are from the City of Nyköping, a city that has had lot's of problem with Nazis (as Ultima Thule) and Action-rockers as Action 69), do you see any connection between these groups and the quite large punk scene in Nyköping? And what do you feel about the fact that Action 69 has played on punk gig´s? Have you come over this problem today or is it just getting worse as the actionrockers is slowly infiltrate Burning Heart through VoaG, this is not quite unlike the Ultima Thule insident in the begining of the 90´s when they signed big labels and trying to get house-clean... As far as Nazis go: they are all gonna die! But they're not a big problem here since they keep to themselves in the redneck areas surrounding Nyköping. About Action 69 I can't really give you a review since the last time I saw them live I was really drunk and got thrown outta the place they where playing and that was a couple of years ago. On a personal level Jonas and I have done a little male bonding so there's really no beef there. I haven't really heard VOAG in a couple of years so I can't really talk trash about them either, though I'm sure you're disappointed. I have only nice things to say about the current members of VOAG. They seem to be nice people. Dannes and Kimmos other band the Accidents rocks ass and Dannes Genocide SS is da bomb too, I know that much. I rarely take interest in the bands on Burning Heart since It's not my style but I think the new Nasum album is the best stuff they've done in a couple of years. I don't really care what they put out to tell you the truth. Well to get back on track, as always life is a big disappointment, I'm not talking about the fucked up swe-crust "oh poor me" way, I'm talking about the general darkness surrounding all of us, you have your self taken up some of these thoughts in your lyrics and spoken about "everyday hate", could you please tell us a little bit about your beliefs in today's world and and also on your local surrounding. Different people focus on different things when they write songs. I think it's a personal obligation to do what you're best at rather than doing what's the current trend or the most pc at the time. We're not a gloomy band, the negative tone in the lyrics rather come from a dark sence of humour and the fact that we're not interested in Blink182/Millencolin/Toy Dolls-type lyrics with just a silly content. I you scream "I wanna die!" or "I gotta knife and I'm gonna cut you motherfucker!" get peoples attention and makes us feel good. Since they stand out in a bargain-bin of swe-crust records some people tend to remember them rather than combinations of "Napalm/nuclear war", "Scene poilitics/voilent dancing", "Death/destruction", "Animals/children/women in pain", "Cops/nazis/machos/Americans are bad" etc. There's very few people in Sweden who can write good political crust-type lyrics: Wallenberg, Tompa, Peken and Jallo are the ones I can think of at the moment. I may have forgot someone but that's a pretty slim fucking chance. Off course they reflect issues that concern me too but I could never live up to their standard in that genre of lyrics. Believe me, I've tried when I heard Svart Snö for the first time about ten years ago but it came out like most other Swedish pc-punklyrics today - like a mongoloid three year old wrote them while watching 60 minutes. I think our lyrics are at least a bit better than that. And don't even get me started on the self pity type lyrics or the kooky abstract ones that have become a fashion lately. As I was listening to you I was just gonna reflect on the Svart Snö thing, I believe Higo has once again become a vital part of the swedish scene since he started up Sunday Morning Einstein, this band can't get enough props in today's punk scene, I believe they combining the old and the new in a real good way and are staying top notch even though lot's of changes in the lineup. As being as cool as we are name dropping bands once again, what bands works for you today? I think SME really needs a dirty mean recording to make a real classic. Ok, let's do active/recently active bands: Swedish Bands: Pricks, Regulations, HFOS, Sayyadina, Unabombers, Victims, Rabid Grannies, Sportlov, Genocide SS, Public Toilets, Eva Eastwood, Skitsystem and a couple more. Foreign bands: Spits, Exploding hearts, Severed Head of State, Anal Cunt, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Patton related shit, Kids at Widney High, Dean Dirg, Wesley Willis [rip], Steve McQueens, Dead Moon, Queers, Kidnappers, Dwarves, Prima Donnas, Senor Coconut, Chumps, Minds and a whole lot more So I think that summon things up, or? any last words? We love you all...and remember: have a good time all the time! |
